History of Ms. Lilly

From its inception, this magnificent residence was surrounded by mystery and the thrill of adventure.  It was custom built by Miss Lilly Schneeberger, who in 1956 co-founded Max Daetwyler Co., a Swiss manufacturing company which originally produced components for civil and military aviation, and later developed machinery which would revolutionize the printing industry. While traveling throughout the United States, this free-spirited entrepreneur was captivated by the beauty of the Adirondack Mountains and their similarity to her homeland in Switzerland.  The same passion and energy that drove her to assist with the global expansion of Daetwyler motivated her to build an estate resembling a Bernese-style Swiss villa. This would be her mountain refuge.

Every detail of the building project was a labor of love.  She employed the local vendor Bryant Lumber* (still in operation) to turn her sketches into a realty.  She even had workers construct a lumber mill to use trees harvested from the property for fencing. Ms. Lilly purchased a 19th century historical stone building from which craftsman Oliver Phinney built the fireplaces.  Her earliest childhood memories were of the mountains of her homeland which were similar to the virgin countryside of Moriah, New York.  She changed the topography to create an elevation for the house that enabled her bedroom balconies to face the green-drenched mountains and see across flowering meadows to Lake Champlain.

Later, due to failing health, she returned to her homeland, but she left a legacy to the gravure printing and industrial engineering industries through the Daetwyler companies, now in their 3rd generation, selling products worldwide.

Imagine in the 50's, a woman co-founding a company in the aviation industry.  If a novel were to be written about the life and times of Miss Lilly, a portrait would emerge of a woman with tremendous inner strength and fortitude who pursued her dreams with the same love and commitment, whether developing new innovations at work or realizing her vision for her paradise in the Adirondack Mountains.

Her presence is felt in every aspect of the estate she so carefully created in Moriah, New York.  Ms. Lilly's life at the North Winds Estate was filled with artists and celebrities from all over the world who gathered to be nurtured by the warmth of her spirit and the welcoming embrace of this sanctuary cradled in the heart of the Adirondacks.

* Founder Charles Bryant of Bryant Lumber remembers Miss Lilly's arrival.  "She was visiting with friends and decided to build a home resembling her home land.   When she came to us, she had just a picture, sketch and cash; giving us authority to design and be creative.  The only changes made were the change from a concrete floor to a wood floor (apparently concrete floors were common in Europe) and a larger outside deck.   We enjoyed Miss Lilly's easy going nature and it took over a year to fulfill her dreams."  Charles Bryant, quality builders and suppliers at Bryant Lumber.  To learn more about this community in the Adirondacks, click here (IAATAP is sponsored by ACHR).
